Phase Fatale

“Off Desire” by Phase Fatale is released as a 12-inch vinyl on Dekmantel and brings together four precisely crafted tracks: “Immobile Symmetry,” “Guts,” “Blue Rose,” and the title track “Off Desire.” The release marks Phase Fatale’s debut in the Dekmantel UFO series and at the same time presents his first solo releases in two years.

Musically, Hayden Payne fuses powerful, bass-driven techno with robotic rhythms and dystopian soundscapes. Analog, polyrhythmic sequences form the framework, over which surreal atmospheres, jagged shards of sound, and recurring melancholic melodic fragments unfold. References to Birmingham and Detroit techno, along with echoes of acid house, post-punk, and shoegaze, create a stripped-back yet multi-layered structure.

Behind Phase Fatale is Berlin-based DJ, producer, and label owner Hayden Payne, who has held long-standing club residencies and is regarded as an influential figure in contemporary techno. His production style combines retrospective references with a deliberately modern production aesthetic, resulting in a dense, hypnotic sonic image. According to the press release, the title track is dedicated to longtime friend and collaborator Silent Servant and evokes a dreamlike escalation somewhere between David Lynch and the sci-fi body nightmare of David Cronenberg, where staccato beats meet dreamy guitar moments and distorted, ethereal voices.
